On Tuesday mornings, a small group of people meet at Unity Yoga for a gentle yoga class. They are interested in enjoying all the benefits of yoga: enhancing flexibility and balance, increasing strength, and improving posture through gentle stretching.
At Unity Yoga breathing is emphasized. Breath focus can lead to stress reduction. As your mind is focusing on breathing, it becomes more difficult to be thinking about all those issues in your everyday life. In this way, your breath is a bridge which can take your from your everyday outward directed state of mind inward. And by focusing on your breath, you experience the present moment, which keeps you from dwelling on the past or the future.
What makes this class different? This class emphasizes numerous sitting postures using a chair, as well as standing postures, often using the wall as a support. Cynthia Mathis teaches a gentle style of Hatha Yoga, which is compassionately taught.
Who should take this class? Anyone, who would like to do yoga, but does not feel comfortable sitting on the floor, or taking a regular yoga class. People with limited mobility--either temporary or permanent are encouraged to attend. Yoga is something that anyone can do regardless of age, body type or activity level. This is a great way to get back to your normal level of activity, or increase your current level of activity.
Classes are held from 10:30-11:45a.m. on Tuesday mornings. If you cannot regularly attend, the drop-in fee is $15. Unity Yoga is located at the First Congregational Church, Westfield.
